Saffron, Earth & Smoke
In Greek mythology, Charon was the ferryman who guided the souls of the dead to the underworld. He would transport the deceased who have been given funeral rites, in his small skiff using a wooden pole to slowly push the boat across the rivers Styx and Acheron to Hades. Upon death, the ancient Greeks would traditionally place a low-value coin, known as Charon’s obol, in or near the mouth of the deceased as payment to the ferryman. Those who couldn’t afford this payment were said to wander the shores of the Styx for one hundred years as unsettled spirits, who would haunt the living, before being allowed access to Hades. Charon’s role as a psychopomp in Greek mythology made him both a figure of great importance as he literally bridged the gap between life and death as he guided souls on their final journey to the afterlife.
