In Ancient Greek mythology, Hecate is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, necromancy and the lunar night. She is often associated with the boundaries between worlds and is therefore recognised as a goddess of the underworld. As a holder of the keys that unlock the gates between realms, she can unlock the gates of Hades and could control the three-headed hound who guarded the gates to the underworld, Cerberus. Hecate is often depicted as having three faces or bodies, which face back-to-back, looking in all directions and reflecting her power over the three realms of land, earth and sea. She is often depicted holding torches and keys, and is sometime surrounded by black hounds, whose howls announce her presence. Hecate was considered to be a powerful deity, associated with magic, spells and incantations, She also has a strong connection to the night and lunar cycle and dark aspects of the moon. Hecate was also the protector of the oikos, or household, and was invoked by families in Ancient Greece to ward off evil spirits and to ensure blessing and prosperity within the home.
