The notorious Marquis de Sade was an 18th century French libertine and nobleman who is famed for his extreme literary works of erotic fiction. Sade often explored the dark, hidden desires and deviant impulses of human nature in shocking and perverse ways. Never has a writer agitated more polarised debate than Sade with many people celebrating him for his demands of complete political liberty and sexual freedom, whilst also condemning him for his depraved and cruel behaviour.
Sade had a dark side to his nature and for him life imitated art, with his personal life mirroring many of his erotic fantasies. He lived a scandalous libertine lifestyle and committed many heinous crimes and atrocious acts. He was eventually arrested for his crimes and imprisoned in a mental asylum, where he died many years later. Whether you love him or hate him, one cannot deny the influence and impact that Sade has had on the literary world, pop culture and art.
