The tale of Ostara and the hare details the little know origin of the Easter Bunny. One day Ostara, the ancient Germanic goddess of spring, found a poor dying bird frozen in the snow. Wishing to save the bird, she transformed it into a snow hare. She then gifted the hare with the ability to run fast, which allowed him to always evade hunters. He also retained the ability to lay eggs, which he did once a year on her festal day, which we know as Easter. Eventually, Ostara became angered at Lepus, and flung him into the sky, where he remains for all eternity as the Lepus constellation, positioned beneath the feet of Orion, the Hunter.
