In Sweden and parts of Finland, Skärtorsdagen (Holy Thursday) is the day when children dress up in oversized clothes and paint freckles and rosy cheeks on their faces to go door to door with a copper kettle looking for lollies and treats. The tradition, which is called Påskkärring, is said to come from the old belief that witches would fly on stolen broomsticks on this date to the island of Blåkulla to cavort, feast and dance with the Devil. Swedes would then light fires to scare the witches away, a practice still continued today by the lighting of bonfires and fireworks across Sweden in the days leading up to Easter Sunday.
